Gaaahh!

Wouldn’t it be better axeing this ailing and boring reality show and spending the money saved on decent comedy? You can watch a ten year old repeat of Father Ted and still find it hilarious but who in ten years time could stomach a re run of Big Brother, or even remember who actually won it. Hopefully if BB finally dies this year, then it gives Channel 4 the money to spend on comedy and comedy drama.

Pretty much every sitcom seems to be aimed at teenagers now, and a lot of it seems aimed at being the next Bo Selecta (which wasn’t exactly a classic to start with). Peep Show and The IT Crowd aside (which I’ve never really taken to myself) the channel has produced a long string of comedic duds, and yeah, the reality TV fixation I think is largely to blame

For my money Free Agents was perhaps the best thing on any channel so far this year: a fast-paced comedy with at times devastating emotional power – a brilliant piece of drama as well as being very funny. I might have missed the references in the article to The IT Crowd and Green Wing (I never got the latter myself, but it was undeniably a success for the Channel), and several of the Comedy Lab pilots last year held a lot of promise. OK, C4 has a lot of cheap filler in all of its genres, but I don’t recognise the picture of a barren comedy landscape painted by this article.
