I almost forgot, here’s a clip that shows ITV have previous in missing important goals. We do at least get to enjoy one of the greatest “Forgive us, but we’re getting these pictures from the host broadcaster” moments you will ever see.

Going by each season’s Cup Final previews in Match magazine during the 1980s, it seemed that when it came to nicknames, every team in Division One had at least two Triggers, plus at least one Rodney, and often one ‘Dave’ (in the context of Trigger’s name for Rodney). It’s originality like this that mean you could generally guess the answers to each player’s matchday programme profile. “Steak and chips”, “Dire Straits, Luther Vandross and Tina Turner”, “None that I know about, ho ho”, etc.

What have Setanta got to fill the hours with, though? When BBC1 and ITV went at the build-up hammer and tongs they did it with special editions of proper shows. There’s surely only so much Setanta have available to suck dry.

Wry irony notwithstanding I actually like Andy Townsend, although I prefer him as co-commentator, mainly because he knows what he’s talking about and is entertaining
