This could be seen as the year when seventies type ratings returned for entertainment shows: the final of BGT pulling in the highest audience figure for a Saturday programme since the early 80s and episodes of the X Factor pulling in 15 million viewers.

As was pointed out last year, the soaps are no longer guaranteed top billing every week. The week I’m A Celeb was launched saw The X Factor, I’m A Celeb, Strictly Come Dancing and Doc Martin grab the top four places with Corrie and Eastenders down to fifth and sixth in the charts. On one occasion this year Strictly went head to head with Corrie and beat it by 4 million viewers. The overkill with episodes, repetitive and often depressing plots and poor acting are seeing viewers turn away and in a time of recession this isn’t what people want.
