…And, following Roly Keating’s footsteps, it’s another BBC4 graduate.

Janice Hadlow

Janice Hadlow

The BBC has announced today that Janice Hadlow – current Controller of BBC4 – is to take on the role in early November.

Jana Bennett, Director of BBC Vision, said: “Janice is an outstanding original thinker who has led BBC4 from strength to strength.

“She has demonstrated a passion for intelligent television across the different genres, with an eye for making an impact, whether that is in serious factual programming, mould breaking comedy or authored drama.

“I look forward to Janice bringing her enormous creativity and ability to inspire others to BBC2.”

No surprise here, but then who else was in the frame? Nobody of note, if you believe the Media Guardian (which is never the best source for stories on the BBC, but then I haven’t seen this story reported anywhere else). Which, really, is pathetic. Has there ever been such a poor pool of candidates for what is, as Will Wyatt once proclaimed, the best job in television? The cream of the crop should have been gasping for a shot at running BBC2. Instead it looks like Hadlow’s rivals were a couple of ‘knowledge commissioning editors’. Risible. Still, Hadlow will do a decent job. It means there’s yet another veteran of The Late Show in charge of the channel (there can’t be many left, surely?) And we’re back where we were in Greg Dyke’s time, with the three top telly jobs at the Beeb (MD plus controllers of 1 and 2) all occupied by women.
