Primeval/Doctor Who collision!

Monday, September 15, 2008 by

ITV1 has announced a new drama starring Douglas Henshall and Paul McGann.

Collision, by Anthony Horowitz, has just begun filming. It tells the story of a major road accident and a group of people who’ve never met, but all share this one defining moment in their lives.

Henshall (noticeably absent from recent Primeval series three shots) and Shaun of the Dead‘s Kate Ashfield play police officers in charge of the investigation. One-night-only Doctor Who McGann is a millionaire property dealer, while Shameless star Dean Lennox Kelly and brother Craig Kelly (Queer as Folk) team-up for the first time to play siblings Danny and Jeffrey, whose business dealings are exposed by the accident.

Other cast members include Phil Davis, Clare Rushbrook and Jan Francis.

Peter Fincham says of his first new independent drama commission for ITV1: “This is a high octane event drama that combines creative and original thinking with mass appeal. It promises to be both provocative and engaging.”

Its all well and good to have new drama but this seems to be a television version of the film Crash (not David Croenberg’s version) or BBC’s Five Days produced under Peter Fincham. Surely ITV can come up with orginal drama rather then rehashed drama.

See also the rather good hyperlink film 11:14. It is a very good cast but it does still feel like ITV their usual ‘trick’ of taking an idea and doing it their own way. Still, if Paul’s not going to be in Doctor Who after all :(
